Dual-glass Module

2025.08.29

In frameless solar panel systems, aluminum is not used, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing design while still maintaining high efficiency levels. In these solar panel systems, the solar cells are placed between two layers of glass, hence the name "double-glass" solar panels. These arrays are placed closer to the roof and lack any frame to support them. Therefore, thicker glass is used on the solar panels to provide structural stability.

Advantages of using frameless solar panels:

They are very attractive to customers, creating the impression of "floating panels" on the roof.

Frameless solar panels lack a metal frame, making them less prone to accidents.

These panels blend better with darker shingle colors.

The frameless design offers a long service life because it reduces the effects of potential induced degradation (PID).

These panels use bolts, rather than clips, to penetrate the glass surface. Bolt-on installation generally allows for quick installation.

Frameless solar panels are free of problems like frame corrosion and are more durable.

Frameless panels are less expensive than traditional framed panels and offer better performance because there is no debris accumulation around the edges. Increased packaging density and reduced weight reduce shipping costs.

Issues with Frameless Solar Panels:

Frameless solar panels have yet to gain significant traction in the global solar market. The main bottleneck to their adoption is that they require specific types of mounting structures to ensure proper operation, which are often unavailable. Furthermore, without a proper frame, the edges of the solar panels can be somewhat weak.

Another issue is the mandatory use of thick glass in the manufacture of these solar panels to maintain structural integrity. Overall, frameless solar panels still have several technical challenges to overcome before they can become mainstream.
